Een Weekend in Roggel
Sinterklaas is in Nederland aangekomen!
Besides the fact that Sinterklaas has arrived in the Netherlands, it was an exciting weekend! My host grandparents (is that what you call them?) celebrated 40 years of marriage this weekend! To celebrate, the whole family got together in Roggel for 3 days.
As someone whose entire family lives half the world away in Australia, it is definitely a new experience to have such a large family living so close. I find it very gezellig! It is also incredible how easily everyone has accepted me into the family and it definitely makes a HUGE difference in my exchange year. By the end of this year, I am going to have a whole second family!
In Roggel, we stayed in two of the most “dutch” looking houses I have ever seen. They were so cute, along with the entire park. Everything about the houses, streets, and little yards was very cookie cutter, I loved it.
My absolute favorite thing about the people I’ve met so far in the Netherlands is the number of games they play. At home, I am always trying to force my family to play card games with me but here my host family plays a game every night after dinner. So naturally, this weekend was spent playing lots of games. I even learned a new one; boerenpotten. I will definitely be bringing that one back to the states.
I also got my first taste of Sinterklaas this weekend! We all crowded around the TV to watch the Sinterklaas Journal, a short daily show for the kids, and honestly, I was just as excited as the young kids. Watching Sinterklaas ride into Dokkum on his boat from Spain really put me in the holiday mood. You’ll definitely see my shoe at the fireplace waiting for Sinterklaas! As a holiday-loving gal, I definitely picked the right country.
Overall, the weekend really was gezellig and I am so grateful and lucky that I have such an incredible host family. I’m really looking forward to Sinterklaas!
